Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) is a procedure that allows physicians to assess areas surrounding the voice box and opening of the esophagus, through the use of a small flexible endoscope.

The endoscope is passed through the nose after anesthetizing this area to minimize pain or discomfort. Once the endoscope is in position, your child is given various foods to eat. The specialist observes and evaluates the swallowing process.

We evaluate the developmental aspects of swallowing and the structural aspects of the upper aerodigestive tract to determine the safety of swallowing.

After the procedure, we can give you and your child specific recommendations to improve the safety and efficacy of swallowing.

The endoscopic swallowing study is just one way to assess the safety and integrity of your child’s swallow mechanism.

  • Defines the anatomy

  • Demonstrates the safety of swallowing

  • Is very helpful in patients where questions of aspiration of saliva are being considered

  • Is useful as a preoperative evaluation prior to the reconstruction of the airway, to predict which patients will be at risk for aspiration during the postoperative period

A nasofibrolaringoscopia é o exame que oferece a visibilização do nariz, is a visual examination of the nose, throat and the area at the back of your child’s throat or the area where the voice box is located. This exam is recommend for the patient who exhibits the following symptoms:

  • Distúrbios respiratórios e respiração ruidosa

  • Problemas de voz e fala

  • Narrowing of the nose/throat

  • Difficulty swallowing

The primary goal of an office laryngoscopy is to discover the cause of the symptoms your child is experiencing. , which is a thin tube with a camera at the end, into your child’s nose and then to the back of the throat. The video image is displayed on monitors for you and your child to see. The procedure is usually very short lasting only a couple minutes. The experience is interactive for you and your child. It's applied a topical medication to decongest and numb the nasal passages, as this can be the most irritating part of the endoscopy.
